UPDATED GUIDANCE ON SHIELDING LETTERS FOR PATIENTS – JUNE 2020

PATIENTS ARE TO GO TO THIS website with them which sets out the government plans for easing the restrictions on these patients;

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/plans-to-ease-guidance-for-over-2-million-shielding

From 6th July they can meet in groups of up to 6 outdoors and form a 'support bubble'. I think it is anticipated that this will be relaxed further from 1st August so that patients no longer have to shield, but can still access support if needed.  The information on the website includes letters to employers.

Change in process during the Covid-19 pandemic

To support GP practices and patients we have slightly changed our processes in the POD as follows

  • Patients will be advised to keep 7 days of medication at home in case they need to self-isolate. Therefore they can order 10 days prior to them running out.

  • All prescriptions should be sent via EPS. If a patient hasn’t a nomination as they like to pick up a paper prescription from the surgery then we will advise them they must nominate a pharmacy during this time.

  • Medication reviews – If a patient’s review is due we will send a message to the GP but we will not inform the patient to contact the surgery. The GP can then make the decision if the patient needs to be seen.

  • To prevent stockpiling and potential stock shortages we will not issue more than one prescription at a time unless the patient has a genuine reason – most holidays will have been cancelled. Patients travelling within England can nominate a local pharmacy when they next need to order.

  • We will request an eRD prescription if appropriate (this will be initiated by a pharmacy technician)

UPDATE TO SERVICES

IN ORDER TO FREE UP VITAL RESOURCES AND TO HELP PROTECT OUR PATIENTS, VISITORS AND STAFF, THE FOLLOWING SERVICE UPDATES HAVE NOW COME INTO EFFECT.

White Cross

The Emergency Department at University Hospital Coventry is no longer treating minor injuries or illness in adults (aged 16 and over).

Coventry Urgent Treatment Centre (CV1 4FS) and Rugby Urgent Treatment Centre (CV22 5PX) will provide these essential services to the community.

Patients attending University Hospital with minor injuries or illness will be re-directed to these facilities.

All other emergency services at University Hospital, including the Children's Emergency Department (ages 0 to 15) will be operating as normal.

Too Many Hooked On Prescription Drugs

As recently reported by the BBC, a Public Health England review has looked into the use of strong painkillers, antidepressants and sleeping tablets, revealing that they were being used by a quarter of adults every year.

Officials are now saying that such long-term use on such a large scale cannot be justified and is a sign of patients becoming dependent on these drugs.

NHS England has said that they have already made investment in talking therapies and social prescribing (ie exercise classes and arts-based activities) as these may be more appropriate alternatives.

PHE says that patients should not stop taking their drugs and instead they should talk to their GP who will be looking to review the medications prescribed and seeking alternative solutions.

If so, we will need to ensure we have your most up to date mobile telephone number.

Notice to patients: 21st May 2018 Galley Common premises will be open from 8.30am Monday to Friday.
